Does it work outside France?
Not yet. Murmure covers France: 47,000 listed monuments from the French Ministry of Culture registers, plus 230,000 points of interest from OpenStreetMap. European expansion is being considered.
Does it work offline?
Not for now. You need a data or Wi-Fi connection to receive nearby places. An offline mode is on the roadmap.
Will it drain my battery?
Walk Mode uses continuous GPS, but the screen stays off most of the time. Expect 5 to 10% per hour depending on the phone, significantly less than Google Maps navigation with the screen on. You can turn it off whenever.
Who records the memos?
To kick things off, Murmure's author seeded a first version of the database, focused on the Île-de-France region and Calvados: memos generated from Wikipedia, read by a synthetic voice. Gradually, contributors (historians, locals, tourist offices) record their own memos. Like Wikipedia.
What's the difference with Izi.TRAVEL or a classic audioguide?
Izi.TRAVEL (and audioguides in general) work by tours: you pick a route, download it, and follow the path. Murmure is passive: you walk wherever you want, and the app alerts you when you pass near a place. No planning, no booking, no set itinerary.
Do you store my location?
No. Never. The app sends your coordinates to our servers to return nearby places, and nothing is kept. Zero third-party SDK, zero advertising ID.
When on iOS?
Before summer. The current priority is Android and the contributor ecosystem, then iOS will follow.
Is it really free?
Yes, for all users: no subscription, no premium, no in-app purchases. A dedicated subscription is coming for professionals (tourist offices, towns, cultural venues) who want to enrich their places with their own content.
