This modest building is dedicated to Saint Denis, the man who, according to legend, was beheaded around 250 AD on the hill we now call Montmartre, and then calmly picked up his own severed head and walked several miles north before finally laying down to rest. That spot became the great royal abbey of Saint-Denis, burial place of French kings.
